Three Filipino-American nurses were inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing

Three Filipino-American nurses were inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing on October 18, 2014. Tess L. Briones, PhD, RN, FAAN from Wayne State University; LeoreySaligan, PhD, RN CRNP, FAAN from the National Institute of Nursing Research; and Marlon Garzo Saria, MSN, RN, AOCNS, FAAN from the University of California San Diego were three of the 168 nurse leaders inducted into the Academy this year. The Academy serves the public and the nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge. The Academy's more than 2,100 members- known as fellows- are nursing's most accomplished leaders in education, management, practice and research.

 

Preceding the induction ceremony, on Thursday, October 16, Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the United States of America, hosted a reception in honor of the Filipino-American Fellows of the Academy and expressed gratitude to the American Nursing Community for their support of the Typhoon Haiyan relief and recovery efforts.  In attendance were Officers and Board Members of several professional nursing associations, Deans and Professors of Nursing who were there to support their Filipino-American colleagues. Dr. Leticia Hermosa, President of the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) introduced the Filipino-American fellows of the Academy while PNAA Immediate Past President Victoria Navarro gave an update on recovery efforts on behalf of the Philippine Humanitarian Coalition.
